JAMBERRY
NAIL ART STUDIO
Improving usability to help users customize products to their exact preferences.
Overview
Jamberry is a beauty startup that made its name producing do-it-yourself nail wraps, which are heat-activated vinyl adhesives that you apply to your nails to add a fun flair to your look. As a UX designer at Jamberry, I was responsible for the e-comm experience on Jamberry.com (no longer available).
Jamberry Nail Art Studio put the power in the hands of the customer — allowing anyone to create the nail art of their dreams with the click of a mouse.
PRODUCT GOAL
Increase user retention and improve the user experience
RESPONSIBILITIES
UX, visual design, QA
ROLE
Senior UI/UX Designer (lead designer)
TEAM MEMBERS
Product manager, frontend engineer
First Challenge
The Jamberry catalog was filled with hundreds of unique designs, which rotated out every 6 months. Plus, there were 10-20 additional exclusive designs created each month — too much for our in-house wrap designers to maintain with the manual process that was in place.

First Solution
I updated the existing design tool and created an experience that empowered our customers to create their own designs and sell them through a centralized marketplace.
Beta Test Results
After a Beta launch of the system, we quickly realized that the creation tool was difficult to keep up with, in terms of maintenance. We had a huge increase in software bugs and an onslaught of questions coming through Customer Support regarding the buggy technology.

Second Challenge
The existing system was full of bugs and ended up costing a lot to maintain.
Second Solution
Create a set of design templates for customers to personalize, using the existing catalog of designs. Allow customers to submit their customizations to be sold through jamberry.com.

Results
We tested the product with over 1,500 beta users at our annual conference. People found it easy to use and were excited for its potential. Because of changing business priorities and unforeseen blockers, we were unable to release the final solution for public use.
